About Des Moines Residents Directory

Des Moines no longer has one current book naming every resident. Useful leads sit in separate systems: Polk County links owners with parcels and recorded deeds, Iowa maintains voter records, and Des Moines Public Library preserves printed directories. We organize those official routes so a name, street, or old address can be matched with the right custodian and date.

Why This Reference Exists

Printed Des Moines directories ended, yet the records behind resident research remain. Polk County's Assessor and Recorder keep property evidence. Iowa election law governs voter information. Historical volumes and microfilm sit with the public library, Polk County Archives, and the State Historical Society of Iowa. Bringing their search links, office contacts, coverage limits, and request choices together makes local research easier to verify.

What Is Included

  • Pages by angle: the street directory (address-keyed records), the city directory (the historical shelf), and the resident lookup (one-person searches)
  • The rolls and offices: assessor, recorder, elections office, court clerk, vital records, the library's local history collection
  • Walkthroughs: how to trace who lives on a street, how to read a directory entry, how to follow a household across the decades
  • Access rules: what Iowa law opens, what remains confidential, and how to request a record that is not online

Limits of the Service

This is a privately operated reference site. It is not connected with the City of Des Moines, Polk County, the State of Iowa, any court, or any library. These limits apply:

  • We cannot confirm whether a specific person currently lives in Des Moines
  • We cannot pull, certify, or change any record on your behalf
  • We cannot add anyone to, or remove anyone from, any roll or database
  • We cannot give legal advice about a record or a dispute
  • We cannot promise that every coverage year, link, or office detail here is current at this moment

Only the custodian office can confirm, certify, or correct a record. Nothing found through this site may be used for credit, employment, tenant, or insurance decisions.
